Cliff May Homes
Cliff May (1909-1989), despite never becoming a registered architect, is said to be "the father of the California ranch house." His homes during the 1940's and 1950's captured the essence of how earlier settlers lived under the California sun. He designed and built over 1000 custom houses beginning with his first at age 23. In a recent MHM slide show featuring the photography of the now deceased Julius Shulman, we looked back at perhaps the greatest modern architectural photographer. As you might expect the paths of Shulman and May did cross. The above photo taken by Shulman is Cliff May's 1954 ...
Julius Shulman Photography
UPDATE: Since our last feature slide show posted just two months ago we have learned of the death last night of Mr. Shulman. MHM celebrates his legacy in photographs and presents a small sample of his work in honor of more than 70 years of excellence. Thank you Mr. Shulman for helping us remember the past. Julius Shulman, the eminence grise of modern architecture photography is the subject of a new feature film narrated by Dustin Hoffman and directed by Eric Bricker. Having received a lot of media attention for coming out of retirement and continuing to work at age 98, Shulman ...
The LEED House
Early in 2007 the Z6 house by architect Ray Kappe was the first single family house in the US to be awarded a LEED Platinum certification. The house is said to be built with 75 percent less construction waste, and 80 percent more energy efficient than a conventionally built house. Meanwhile, just this past year The Casey, an upscale urban high-rise in Portland, Oregon, became the first Platinum level LEED certified condo.
MiLoft Apartments
The international architectural firm RMJM is introducing a timely apartment design called MiLoft. The revolutionary claim by the firm is that MiLoft "uses body heat to keep occupants warm." No doubt skepticism will follow, but MiLoft has already attracted a great deal of attention from politicians and housing organizers in the UK, and the concept is backed up by MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery) technology from Max Fordam Consulting Engineers. MiLoft represents recognition that the the future of housing must center on design and engineering advances to make modern eco-conscious housing affordable for the larger population. After initial development in the ...
Will Green Turn Gold?
In an attempt to build a case for yet another green rating system, the National Association of Home Builders under their relatively new "Green Building Program" has laid down a goal of increasing US house energy efficiency by at least 15 percent when compared to non-rated houses.

Medusagroup Box
From Poland Medusagroup shows off their stark modern dwelling complete with materials like concrete floors and metal framing.
We borrow the descriptions from Arch daily: “The main entrance, garage, toilet for guests and a corridor are located to the north whereas bedroom, children room, living, dining and kitchen are to the south. Because of that all rooms enjoy a direct connection with the terrain separated by covered terrace.

Glenn Park
From the AIA San Francisco Living: Home Tours comes Glen Park residence. The owner is also the architect, and a LEED-certified senior associate at Sasiki. It’s a good thing too because this project would have depended on a lot of patience by a client.
After three variances and about 5 years of work this in-fill house was rewarded with the 2008 Best Custom Home under 5,000 square feet. Take a look at the photos to see why.

Cowboy Container
In our story Chelsea Morning about the Hudson river Park Trust using LOT-EK’s design to dress up Pier 57 we recalled musing about yet another previous story on shipping container houses that, “no one should be shocked if we don’t all end up living in one…some time in the future.”
Another step in that direction is this design of four containers by architect Christopher Robertson in Houston Texas.

World Changing
As we reported in our story The LEED House, various organizations are vying for control of how we measure a sustainable future in housing. At the top of the list is the USGBC LEED certification program whose history is detailed in our original story (and followed up by Will Green Turn To Gold?).
More recently, Inhabitat.com has posted many more links to various NGO’s who are giving their updated predictions of the time we may have before we reach the global warming tipping point.

Repurposed Furniture
In Welcome Home House we’ve seen a recent example of architects using primarily re-purposed materials in their designs of sustainable houses, and in Recycled Kitchen well known brand kitchen designers making recycled materials look, well, not recycled.
Now the same idea can also be applicable to furniture. At least designer Jo Meesters thinks so and designed an experimental line of furniture crafted out of discarded wood beams and leftover blankets.
