Nottoscale
A couple of architects with major firm experience have struck out on their own to form Nottoscale, a Prefab design firm based in San Francisco.
Nottoscale’s entrant into the world of modern sustainable modular homes is “Modulome” a design originally developed for a competition back in 2003 for which they were awarded one of the prizes.
After years of perfecting the design and developing a network of local builders around the country the Modulome system is now available to the public.
According to Nottoscale, Modulome is made with “an energy efficient wood panel system based on a 2 foot grid.” The five different models range in size from the 588 square foot I-Modulome, to the O-Modulome with over 2300 square feet.
One of the nice touches of these systems though is the amount of deck space cleverly added to each particular design. The extra deck space makes the overall house as a space much larger than just the interior square footage because it’s integrated with the house, and deck space (outdoors) will always feel larger than it is.
It’s a great way, especially in climates with a fair amount of warm weather to get more living space without having to heat or cool (or for the most part maintain) that space. The line between outdoor and indoor space in modern houses is becoming increasingly blurred, and Nottoscale has added to this efficiency.
