GLAMA KIM
Modern house design is sometimes a competition for simplicity. Along those lines is Summertime by GLAMA KIM, an architect firm in Iceland.
Summertime is designed to be a simplistic getaway house where respite and connection with nature takes precedence over posh structural materialism.
The house plan is comprised of two volumes, the main house just 4 by 13 meters houses an open kitchen/living/dining space, while the smaller volume is assigned the task of housing the sleeping areas.
The house is largely constructed off-site and pieced together on-site. Materials include wood framing and corrugated steel cladding on the exterior, and birch plywood cladding on interior. The flooring in Summertime is cork parquet and interior casework is birch plywood.
Compared to other modular houses Summertime may not be the most sustainable design, but it does make another basic point in that just simplifying a house design itself invokes far less materials use, and thereby becoming a more eco-friendly use of space.
