Up Wind
The Oregon Wind Corporation thinks they have an answer to generating electricity in an urban setting that is cost-efficient and also boasts enough design savvy to be a visual complement to any modern house.
Previously those large propeller wind farms that dot the US western states’ hills could only operate in a rural location because of their sheer size and excessive amounts of vibration and noise.
Now, the Oregon Wind Corporation has developed the Helyx Urban Turbine, that is small enough to sit on top of buildings or other typical urban structures, dispenses with vibration that otherwise would interfere with your neighbor’s wind power (that spat is bound to spoil the neighborhood summer block party), and is more efficient than those big rural wind farms – partly because it can generate power right at its source.
Invented by Toby Kinkaid in 2002 the Oregon Wind Helyx has been put to tests and is expected to be ready for market soon.
At Modern House Magazine we’ve seen a lot of modern house designs that are said to incorporate wind power, but nothing like the Oregon Wind Corporation product that could seemingly cross the barrier between wind power on paper, and an actual cost-effective method of generating at-source wind power in an urban setting. We look forward to seeing the market progress.
