Green City USA
Take note cultural-creatives in California, a Florida real estate developer, Kitson & Partners is proclaiming to build the first solar powered city. The 17,000 acre city near Fort Myers will also get the world’s largest photovoltaic power plant.
That means none of the expected 19,000 houses (said to include low-income, apartments, condos, and single-family units) will need to carry a solar panel on the roof but can still operate as a zero-emission solar wonder.
Babcock Ranch, a master-planned city, apparently also wants to save half of its acreage for greenways, install a sustainable water management system, electric car chargers, and green roofs on houses.
The master plan is from Torti Gallas and Partners, but the house builders have yet to be announced.
Babcock Ranch is also said to be currently “in negotiations” with employers from “several large companies,” that are expected to provide the new city with jobs. Ironically, even given the state of the economy, jobs should be the new city’s least worrisome hurdle – it’s not hard to imagine any company seeking a larger “green” footprint wanting to expand or move to Florida’s latest exemplar city.
