Slumdog Architecture
So let’s say your neighborhood isn’t full of great looking architecture and you really don’t want to have to be forced into that kind of immediate view from inside your own house.
To cope with the difficult situation an Indian architecture firm designed for their client a cast concrete design called Out Of The Box, allowing the inhabitants to keep the neighbors at bay.
The Dezeen post tells us: “The plan by Cadence Architecture is a variation on a traditional courtyard house layout; instead of placing the courtyard in the centre of the building the architects have split the house into quarters and placed the courtyard in the northwest corner.
The courtyard is elevated above street level on the first floor and features two perforated walls, traditionally known as jali walls, that allow light and cooling air to pass through from the outside.”
Site specific architecture can take on a lot of meaning, and in this case Cadence has granted their clients wishes by creating a living environment that is autonomous to the supposed more seemly one granted by the particular site location.
Often designers showcase their designs set in a beautiful surrounding. It’s interesting to see what can be done (and can’t be done) in real world situations where a perfect location isn’t possible. Read post in Dezeen.
